Listen. It’s super easy to sit behind your desk, post sh*t to FB, crank out a few blog posts and tell your story from the elusiveness of your home office. But last week, I had the chance to actually meet, in-person, a few of the inspiring women in my 100 Days of Sole Challenge. Let me just say, there is NOTHING better than being in the presence of strong, powerful, tenacious, bad-a** women. Don’t you agree?
Trena (up top) lives in Indiana. For the last few weeks, I’ve watched her kick the world’s a** and take a no excuses approach to training for her first marathon. She’s fast, she’s strong…and she’s 1000 percent on FIRE. (She’s going to smoke Chicago…mark my words.)
We met downtown for a cocktail and ran our mouths for a few hours about everything. (Think blogging, marathons, careers, husbands, life plans, etc.) There was zero small talk…and I can assure you, nothing was off limits. Not once did we chat about the weather, the price of gas or where we shop. We spent most of our time challenging each other to up our game on every level. (She soooo speaks my language.)
Trena wasn’t the only inspiring woman from the Challenge I got to meet last week. Meet my new friend and sole sister Malene:
Malene is also training for HER first marathon…Phoenix in January. Awesome, right? She met me at the a** crack of dawn on Saturday to lay down a solid 5 miles. Woot!
During our time together, the same thing proved to be true. We didn’t chat about the weather, the price of gas or where we shop. (Thank you Jesus.) We went straight to the heart of the matter on a ton of sh*t…without wasting a single minute.
Here’s the deal. (And this is the No. 1 reason you will either love me or hate me if we ever meet.) I prefer to have honest, raw, piercing, authentic, soulful conversations. So, if we ever hang out, (and I sincerely hope we do), let’s not b.s. each other. Tell me why you’re awesome. Tell me what sucks eggs in your life. Tell me, in great detail, about your dreams, goals and where you’re headed. I promise I’ll return the favor by doing the same.
Here’s what’s crazy: Every time I spend time with another runner, that’s exactly the type of conversation we have. (Fierce, raw, authentic, honest, uncensored.)
I’m not sure why that is. Maybe it’s because we’re all bat sh*t. Maybe it’s because we’re like-minded. Or maybe it’s because we have nothing to lose by telling the bloody truth. Whatever the reason, runners seem to “get” each other. I am thankful beyond words I somehow stumbled across my peeps.
A few years ago, I read the book Fierce Conversations by Susan Scott. (If you haven’t read this book, it’s a must read.) In the foreword, Ken Blanchard writes:
“Our lives succeed or fail gradually, then suddenly, one conversation at a time. While no single conversation is guaranteed to change the trajectory of a career, a business, a marriage, or a life, any single conversation can.”
Today, I’m damn thankful runners seem to be ALL IN on having fierce conversations. Because to me, they are the only ones worth having.
P.S. Have you noticed the same thing when you meet other runners? Do you find yourself knee deep in fierce conversations? Come on over and share! https://www.facebook.com/BrooksFirstMarathon

P.P.S.S. I spent most of yesterday afternoon in an emergency room — one of my close friends was in a bicycle accident. Let me tell you folks, that is scary sh*t. Good news is he’s okay.
